Howie Brey- Navesink, NJ- has been selected in the 2016 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros. Brey’s love for baseball started at a young age, while watching Mike Piazza and playing ball in the backyard. His baseball career started when he was six- years old on Sandy Hook’s Little League A’s tee ball team. Ever since then, it has been his dream to become a professional baseball player. Brey’s hard work and dedication to the game allowed him to be a four-year varsity starter at Middletown High School South. His favorite memory of high school baseball was his complete game shut out verse CBA during his freshman year. He continued to dominate on the mound as South’s captain and ace pitcher, which allowed him to be recruited to play baseball at Rutgers University. During Brey’s successful collegiate career, he was effective out of the bullpen his freshman year then became the ace Friday starter his remaining three years at Rutgers. Brey’s favorite memories at Rutgers included playing at the College World Series field in Omaha, playing in the AAC tournament, and throwing a complete game shut out verse rivals Penn State in his senior season. Brey finished his college career with an impressive 3.77 ERA, 291.1 innings pitched, 206 strikeouts, and 8 complete games, while joining the ranks of the top Rutgers pitchers in history. Brey now pitches at the Rookie level for the Houston Astros organization in Greeneville, Tennessee.
